The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is seeking applicants for a commissioned contractor to operate the license plate agency in Ashe County.
In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees license plate agencies, but the agencies themselves are managed by private businesses or local governments. The contract for the current agency, located at 150 Government Circle, Suite 2200, at the Ashe County Government Center in Jefferson, expires March 14, 2027. The agency has been owned and operated by Ashe County government since 2007.
NCDMV's policy is to open applications to operate a license plate agency at the expiration or end of a contract, or when the need arises for a new or additional agency in a county.
Applications must be completed online through the NCDMV Business Portal no later than Sept. 29. Interested applicants will need to create a portal login and may call 919-615-8521 with questions. No mail-in or emailed applications will be accepted.
License plate agencies offer vehicle registration services, title transactions, license plate renewals, replacement tags, and duplicate registrations. There are currently 131 license plate agencies operating statewide.
NCDMV notes that many vehicle services, including property tax payments and registration renewals, can be completed online at NCDMV.gov.
