Morning commuters traveling through Boone will see a different traffic pattern on U.S. 321/221 near Burger King at Boone Heights Drive on Monday, April 15. The N.C. Department of Transportation will change the existing traffic pattern to begin work on the two outside lanes on the U.S. 321/221 bridge, weather permitting, to complete the bridge rehabilitation project.
NCDOT awarded the $331,000 contract to NHM Constructors of Asheville. The project is scheduled to be completed by July 19, and will involve rehabilitating the two outside lanes with latex modified concrete.
Last year, the three middle lanes were rehabilitated. Those lanes were part of the original bridge that was built in 1947 and widened in the 1970s.
Through traffic will be maintained at all times; however, lanes will be shifted depending on which lanes are being worked on. Alternate routes have been set up for local traffic to get around the work zone. Traffic heading north can turn right onto Deerfield Road, left on State Farm Road and left on Shadowline Drive to get back onto U.S. 321/221. Southbound traffic can reverse directions.
For motorists that want to get on Boone Heights Drive off U.S. 321 South, turn left on Shadowline Drive, right onto State Farm Road and right on Boone Heights Drive. To get back onto U.S. 321 South off Boone Heights Drive, motorists can turn right onto State Farm Road, right on Deerfield Road and left on U.S. 321 South. A map showing the alternate routes is below
