NCDOT Works to Repair Section of 194 in Avery County

Last Updated on August 2, 2013 3:26 pm

N.C. Department of Transportation crews are working to repair a section of N.C. 194 near Newland that was damaged by a mudslide on July 16.

NCDOT crews are clearing debris from the slope next to the highway. As part of the process, crews will build a temporary road from the highway to allow equipment to haul away the debris, as well as bring in large materials to build the foundation of the road. In order to get the road open as soon as possible, work will shift to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting Monday, Aug. 5. NCDOT expects the project to take about 90 days to complete.

During inspection of the work site, underground springs were discovered along the slope. Before the slope is rebuilt, NCDOT crews will install pipes to move the springs away from the area.

This section of N.C. 194 is a three-lane road, with two lanes heading southbound just north of Blevins Creek Road (Old N.C. 194). Detour routes have been set up to get traffic around the area:

N.C. 194 South: Take U.S.19E South to N.C. 194 North to U.S. 221 North to N.C. 194 North.

N.C. 194 North: Take N.C. 181 South to N.C. 105 North to N.C. 184 West to N.C. 194 South.
