NCDOT Scheduled To Finish One Bridge Replacement Project, Begin Another In Ashe County

Last Updated on August 28, 2014 6:55 pm

The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing to replace a bridge on Roundabout Road over Cabbage Creek in Ashe County and will install an off-site detour during construction. The Roundabout Road project will begin immediately after completion of a nearby bridge replacement project.

Project contractor James R. Vannoy and Sons Construction Co., Inc. is currently replacing the bridge on Little Laurel Road over Little Laurel Creek with a culvert. This bridge replacement project is included in the $504,877 contract for the Roundabout Road bridge replacement.

Because Little Laurel Road is part of the detour route for the Roundabout Road project, NCDOT can’t close Roundabout Road until the new Little Laurel Road bridge is open to traffic. NCDOT anticipates the Roundabout Road closure to begin in approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

NCDOT will alert the public when an exact closure date is confirmed.

The Roundabout Road detour will direct motorists from Roundabout Road to Parker Road, then from Little Laurel Road to Big Laurel Road and back to Roundabout Road.

The Roundabout Road bridge was built in 1958 and is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. Those classifications mean that although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards no longer in use and needs to be replaced.

The Roundabout Road project is scheduled for completion this fall.
