STATESBORO, Ga. – In a matchup of teams tied atop the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division, App State fell 19-3 at Georgia Southern on Halloween night at Paulson Stadium.
Using one touchdown and three field goals to build a 16-3 lead early in the fourth quarter, those four possessions by the Eagles were scoring drives that required 14, 12, 10 and 14 plays, with each taking more than six minutes off the clock.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 16 points with 4:53 remaining on Tripp Bryant’s fourth field goal of the night, a 48-yard kick, and the Mountaineers quickly had an opportunity to make it a one-score game with a first-and-goal scenario from the Georgia Southern 2 following receptions of 42 yards by Chris Lofton, 9 more yards by Lofton and 21 yards by Nate Branch. Chance Gamble intercepted a pass in the end zone with 3:02 remaining.
App State (5-3, 2-2) cut into a 10-0 deficit on James London’s half-ending field goal but ran only eight offensive plays in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Now the only Sun Belt East team with one league loss, Georgia Southern (4-4, 3-1) finished with a 43:54 to 16:06 advantage in possession time.
Max Johnson completed 36 of 47 passes for 318 yards to lead the Eagles, who limited App State to 6 rushing yards on 16 attempts, including nine scrambles from quarterback Malachi Singleton. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 215 yards, with Pickett totaling 86 receiving yards and Lofton finishing with 82. Colton Phares had 12 tackles to lead the Mountaineers, who host Georgia State next weekend in Boone.
Georgia Southern’s two second-quarter scores resulted from a 14-play, 73-yard drive that lasted 7 minutes, 25 seconds and a 12-play, 81-yard drive that lasted more than six minutes.
Alex Mitchell stopped a second-and-goal run from the 3 for a 4-yard loss, leading to a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead, and Georgia Southern converted a fourth-and-1 run from the App State 12 before moving ahead 10-0 on Taeo Todd’s 5-yard touchdown run.
The Mountaineers started their next series in Georgia Southern territory thanks to Ja’Quez Cross’ 51-yard kickoff return, but a 35-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left to close that possession.
App State ended the half with a successful field goal, as London drilled a 33-yard attempt to cap an 11-play drive that covered the final 1:52 of the second quarter. Singleton completed a fourth-and-1 pass to Dillon Galloway for 2 yards to the Georgia Southern 42 before Alexander Sanchez threw a big block on Pickett’s 10-yard gain with 27 seconds remaining. Singleton gained 11 and 6 yards on QB scrambles to set up London’s kick that cut App State’s deficit to 10-3.
Georgia Southern received the ball to begin the second half and put together another long scoring drive, finishing a 10-play series with a 35-yard field goal. App State’s only five offensive plays in the third quarter occurred on the next drive, and the Eagles increased their lead to 16-3 early in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard field goal to cap a 14-play, 69-yard drive that lasted 7:25.
Georgia Southern’s final points followed an App State fumble that the Eagles recovered at the Mountaineers’ 29.
