Mitchell Highway Named For Bluegrass Legend Del McCoury

Last Updated on October 2, 2022 5:47 pm

A five mile section of NC 261 in Mitchell County was dedicated to Grand Ole Opry member and International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame member Del McCoury on Saturday.

The stretch of road dedication near Bakersville was attended by both McCoury and McCrory (Governor Pat McCrory).

Del McCoury, also a National Endowment of the Arts National Heritage Fellowship award winner, told a media outlet “It is a great honor to have a road named after you” That stands forever.”

McCoury was born in York, Pennsylvania, but his parents and his wife’s parents are Mitchell County natives.
