UPDATE – The Watauga County Sheriff's Office says that Derick Canter is the man that fled from police. A Deputy had gotten out with Canter, age 24, in front of the Courthouse and it was confirmed that he had a warrant for child support. Canter was placed under arrest and was being escorted to the Magistrate’s Office. While in route to the Magistrate’s Office he started running from the Deputy.
He then took shelter in a culvert next to the Old Southern States building. With the assistance of Boone PD, ASU PD, and Probation, Canter was apprehended a short time later and transported to Watauga Medical Center, and was cleared medically. He was then transported to the Magistrate’s Office where he was served with the original warrant was served. He was also charged with Resisting Officer and Marijuana Paraphernalia.
UPDATE from Boone Police 10:52am: “Subject is in custody, thanks for the assistance”
Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a suspect that fled on foot after being handcuffed.
According to a twitter post by Boone Police, “Officers in the area King St/Water/Howard searching for a white male w/blue jacket with black stripe & has on handcuffs suspect fled on foot”
Appalachian State also sent out an alert to students and staff. WataugaOnline.com will update as more information becomes available.
