Johnson County TN Coach Killed In Monday Crash In Watauga County

An assistant football coach at Johnson County High School in Tennessee was killed in a Monday crash near the North Carolina/Tennessee line.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred on Highway 421 near Zionville Fire Department. A Dodge truck traveling toward Tennessee crossed the center line and ran off an embankment, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. No cause has been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

The accident claimed the life of Randy Smith, age 52. Smith was on his way home from work in Boone, according to The Tomahawk newspaper in Mountain City, TN. The wreck was dispatched out to local emergency units just after 5pm.

Highway 421 in that area was closed for several hours, according to incoming social media reports to WataugaOnline.com
