Human Skull Found Near Winklers Creek and Boone Water Intake; Remains Sent to Medical Examiner

BOONE, N.C. – On Friday, October 2, 2026, at approximately 2:49 p.m., a citizen who was with his dog near Winklers Creek discovered what appeared to be a human skull in an area adjacent to the Town of Boone water intake.

Deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Boone Police Department responded to the area and began an investigation.

A follow-up search of the area was conducted today, Tuesday, October 6. No additional remains were located during the search. The recovered remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination and identification.

The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
