Former Local Radio Personality & Sportscaster Passes Away Over The Weekend

A longtime local radio figure passed away on Saturday in Asheville.

Terry Lee Coffey, age 69, worked at WATA Radio from 1970 to 1993 according to his Facebook page. One of Coffey's most memorable on air moments, if not the most memorable, was the call of the 1978 North Carolina State 3A Football Championship game that Watauga won, capping off a 13-0-1 season.

Coffey for a time was also The Voice of Appalachian State Mountaineer Men's Basketball.

Memorial services for Terry Lee Coffey will be conducted Friday afternoon, November 3, 2017, at 2:00 o'clock, at Boone Advent Christian Church. Officiating will be Pastor Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8517.
