A long time former district attorney serving Watauga County, and the High Country, passed away over the weekend.

Gerald “Jerry” Wilson, age 67, passed at Watauga Medical Center on Saturday afternoon, according to Hampton Funeral Service. For 12 years Wilson had served in the 24th Prosecutorial District Attorney's office, which serves Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey Counties. Before that he was an assistant District Attorney for 20 years.

In 2014 Wilson had announced his early retirement due to medical problems. In a statement at the time Wilson said,“I count it a special honor that the people of this district have allowed me to serve them as District Attorney and Prosecutor for over 30 years.”

Funeral services for Jerry Wilson were incomplete as of Sunday afternoon.
