West Jefferson– On Saturday, January 4, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Ashe County on Baldwin Road at Black Bear Inn Road. A 2004 Honda Element traveling southwest on Baldwin Road drove off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole.
Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper was informed by witnesses that the driver was seen exiting the vehicle and running into a wooded area. The trooper entered the wooded area, found the driver unconscious, and administered CPR until EMS arrived. The trooper's AED device was also used to administer care.
The driver, Abraham Grant Jordan, 34, of Fleetwood, was transported by EMS to Ashe Memorial Hospital, in Jefferson, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation indicates excessive speed to be the contributing circumstance in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
