On Friday NCDOT Secretary Gene Contii announced that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force over the Labor Day holiday as part of the “Booze It & Lose It” Labor Day campaign. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted Friday, Aug. 19 through Monday, Sept. 5, across the state in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

“As summer comes to an end, law enforcement officers across the state will be removing impaired drivers from our roads,” Conti said. “Celebrating responsibly is simple; plan ahead and always designate a sober driver.”

In 2010, there were 500 alcohol-related crashes in North Carolina during the Labor Day campaign, which ran from Aug. 20 through Sept. 6 that resulted in 20 fatalities and 395 injuries.

Officers charged more than 3,200 North Carolina motorists with driving while impaired during the 2010 “Booze It & Lose It” Labor Day campaign. More than 11,000 stepped-up patrols and checkpoints were conducted.
