Sam Adams, a native of Boone, lead off the events at the 2023 John Deere Classic with the ceremonial tee shot on Thursday.
Adams was the first American lefty to win on the PGA Tour. That milestone took place on September 30, 1973 at the Quad Cities Open, now the John Deere Classic, in Silvis, Illinois.
Adams played college golf at Appalachian State before turning pro in 1969.
