*UPDATE AUG 7,2012* According to NCDOT Resident Engineer Doug Eller, Aug 10 is still the last scheduled day of closure. Any remaining work will be able to be done under temporary lane closures.
N.C. Department of Transportation will begin a bridge preservation project on Bethel Road (State Road 1202) west of Boone in Sugar Grove at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 26, weather permitting.
The project is scheduled to be completed by August 10. During that time, Bethel Road will be closed and a detour route has been set up. Northbound traffic on Bethel Road will take U.S. 321 to Guy Ford Road (S.R. 1200) to Peoria Road (S.R. 1201) to Bethel Road. Southbound traffic will reverse directions.
Taylor & Murphy Construction Company of Asheville was awarded the contract to perform the work. This involves concrete overlay, deck replacement, cleaning and painting structural steel and bearings, as well as substructure repairs on the bridge over the Watauga River.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
