Banner Elk Fire Rescue is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded almost $200,000 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. This funding will be used to acquire a new fleet of Scott SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) air packs, a crucial investment that will significantly enhance the safety and operational capabilities of the department.

This grant is a monumental win for our small department, providing us with the means to replace aging equipment and ensure our firefighters are equipped with the most advanced safety gear available. The new SCBA air packs are vital for the protection of our firefighters as they perform their duties in hazardous conditions, and this upgrade will bolster our ability to respond effectively to emergencies in the community.

In addition to the AFG grant, Banner Elk Fire Rescue was also awarded the FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. The SAFER grant has provided critical funding for volunteer shift coverage and paid per-call benefits, helping us to maintain and expand our staffing levels to meet the growing demands of our service area. This has resulted in a nearly 200% increase in overall response and retention!

These achievements would not have been possible without the continuous efforts of our dedicated assistant chief, the board of directors, and other personnel who worked tirelessly to secure these grants. Their commitment to the department and the community has been instrumental in securing the resources needed to enhance our capabilities and ensure the safety of our firefighters.

We are extremely grateful to FEMA for their support and are eagerly awaiting the results of several other grant applications we have submitted. These additional funds would further contribute to the growth and development of Banner Elk Fire Rescue, allowing us to continue providing top-notch service to our community.

As we move forward, we remain committed to seeking out opportunities to strengthen our department and ensure that our firefighters have the tools and support they need to carry out their vital work.
