The Avery County Board of Education has selected Dr. Michael L. Murray to serve as Interim Superintendent of Avery County Schools while a permanent superintendent is sought.
Dr. Murray replaces Dr. Logan Burleson, who has served as superintendent since October. The board said Dr. Burleson recently informed them of his decision to resign from Avery County Schools to pursue other opportunities. Board Chair Pat Edwards said the district and community owe Dr. Burleson a debt of gratitude for his service during the transition period.
Dr. Murray brings extensive experience in western North Carolina public education to the role. He served as Superintendent of Schools for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from 2017 to 2023 and as Superintendent of Jackson County Public Schools from 2011 to 2017. He also served as Associate Superintendent in McDowell County Schools and as a school principal in Buncombe County. His career began as a science teacher in Buncombe County in 1984.
“Dr. Murray is the perfect person to lead our schools while the School Board focuses on a selection process for a new Superintendent,” said Board Chair Pat Edwards. “He understands public education and knows how to lead. We are very fortunate.”
Dr. Murray said he is eager to begin. “I have dedicated my professional career to western North Carolina and public education is my passion,” he said. “I look forward to working with the students, parents, professional educators, and the community in Avery County to continue the great work being done in the schools.”
Dr. Murray will begin work Wednesday by visiting schools and getting to know staff. The board said it will release additional information about the permanent superintendent search process at a future date.
