Residents in eastern and central North Carolina are bracing for what is predicted to be a rare weather event for this region – significant accumulation of snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain over the next 24 hours. In a proactive move, N.C. Department of Transportation crews from parts of western North Carolina and the Triad not expected to be heavily impacted by the storm are heading today to the eastern part of the state to support their colleagues in a collaborative effort to clear roads and bridges and make travel safe for motorists.
“I appreciate the dedication of our employees who are traveling hours away from home to bolster our winter weather response efforts in the areas expected to be hardest hit,” said NCDOT Transportation Secretary Tony Tata. “This team approach will ensure that we are ready and able to remove snow and clear the roads as quickly as possible.”
Available NCDOT crews and 54 trucks are currently en route to the eastern part of the state to help plow snow-covered roads and spread salt and sand once the wintry weather hits.
NCDOT is working closely with the National Weather Service to monitor the situation as it affects our state’s interstates, highways, roads and bridges.
