A 2.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Avery County late Saturday night, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake occurred at 10:33 pm and was located 0.2 miles east of Whaley and 14.2 miles west of Boone.
The last time an earthquake was recorded in the High Country was July 21, 2016 when a 1.9 magnitude was centered 5 miles southwest of Newland in Avery County.
In August 2018 a 2.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded between Blowing Rock and Lenoir. Two other times in 2016 earthquakes were centered in Wilkes County and Caldwell County.
