BOONE, N.C. — App State Women's Basketball and Virginia Tech have agreed to a three-game series that will run each of the next three seasons.
The Mountaineers will host the Hokies at the Holmes Center during the 2027-28 campaign. The series begins this season with a Dec. 9 visit to Blacksburg, Va., and also includes a road matchup at Virginia Tech as part of the 2028-29 nonconference schedule.
The 2027-28 meeting will mark App State's first home game against a power conference opponent since the Mountaineers faced Georgia Tech in Boone to open the 2017-18 season.
App State and Virginia Tech have met 16 previous times, most recently in December 2020. The Hokies went 23-10 and reached the NCAA Tournament last year in head coach Megan Duffey's second season. Virginia Tech has made the NCAA Tournament in five of the last six seasons, highlighted by a run to the 2023 Final Four.
The 2027-28 game in Boone will carry extra significance locally: it will mark the return of former Watauga Pioneer standout Kate Sears to her hometown, this time wearing a Virginia Tech uniform.
Sears capped a decorated career at Watauga High School by being named the 2024-25 Gatorade North Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year and landing at No. 82 in ESPN's Top 100 High School Women's Basketball players for the 2024-25 season. She was also named Ms. Basketball by the Charlotte Observer, North Carolina Player of the Year by the NC Coaches Association, and Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Player of the Year for four consecutive years before signing with Virginia Tech.
