WILKESBORO, N.C. — A North Wilkesboro woman is charged with attempted first-degree murder after a man was shot in Wilkes County on Monday, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say that on Monday afternoon, Oct. 26, Wilkesboro police were alerted that a 68-year-old man had driven to the Wilkesboro Fire Department seeking medical help after being shot. Wilkes County EMS treated the man, who was then taken to Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. His injuries are considered critical.

When it was determined the shooting did not happen within Wilkesboro town limits, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office was called in to investigate.

Deputies executed a search warrant at a home in Moravian Falls and detained the suspect, Melissa Sue Gail Hammons, 38, of North Wilkesboro, at the scene. She was subsequently charged with attempted first-degree murder.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation, which officials say remains active. No additional information has been released.
