Overnight reports of slick roads – Back roads in Boone, 221 from Blowing Rock, Howard's Creek Road.
Watauga County Sheriff's Office reported via facebook “@ 22:15: Lt Greene reports that NC Hwy 194N from about Castle Ford Rd on is very slick. We have already had one car slide off the road there.”
Watauga Medical Center weather reporting station records a 57.6mph (50knots) wind gust at 4:55am.
5:35am From the Watauga County Communications facebook page -“12/28 @ 0530: Roads not terrible this morning. Overnight, the only two roads specifically pointed out as slick were NC-194 N from Castle Ford Rd to the county line and Rich Mountain Rd. But plan on most roads having slick spots. DOT has been out working all night. Be carefull out there!!! —Dispatcher Dave”
5:55am – From the facebook page – “The aho, friendship church, bamboo area is covered in black ice becareful out that way …. Western end is in pretty good shape on 421 &321 to the tn lines on both”
5:55am – Watauga Medical Center weather reporting station records a 59.84mph (52knots) wind gust at 5:55am.
6:15am – Most if not all roads are wet, still some slick spots possible.
6:26am – facebook report that Banner Elk to Boone is clear
6:33am – FB report “Aho road is still pretty slick in several spots”
7:07am – Niley Cook is white – just a dusting of snow. 321 into Boone is fine
7:20am – Meat Camp Rd. and Big Hill Rd. is slick per fb report
7:35am – Old 421 in Deep Gap is slick per fb report
7:41am – From scanner – construction barrels have blown into the road between 105 ext/421 and New Market Center
