It was back to school time in Watauga County on Monday. After 72 days of summer vacation, students filled the eight elementary schools and Watauga High to get the 2016-17 year underway.

Dr. Scott Elliott, Superintendent of Watauga County Schools shared with WataugaOnline.com some thoughts on the first day. “We had a great first day of school. All in all everything went very smoothly. I visited all nine schools today, and everywhere I went it was calm and quiet.”

“We had a couple of bus route issues to start, but we always do at the beginning of the year. We appreciate everyone's patience as we work to get things in place.”, he added. “I can't say enough about the hard work of our great staff members to prepare for the school year and to get it started off so smoothly. They are the absolute best!”

Here's a look at the first day back via social media.
