A Watauga County Schools activity bus was involved in a minor accident on Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred at approximately 3:21pm at the intersection of King Street & Poplar Grove Road connector.

No students or drivers were injured, according to both Boone Police and the school system.

Garrett Price, Director of Communications for Watauga County Schools, tells WataugaOnline.com that the bus contained members of a middle school football team and cheerleaders from Mabel, Cove Creek and Bethel. The bus was traveling to Hardin Park for practice. Price went on to say that a mechanic from the school system checked the bus and found only minor bumper and grill damage. The bus was able to drive to Hardin Park safely, as parents were contacted to pick up students at Hardin Park.

Corporal Joe Knapp, with Boone Police, tells WataugaOnline.com that a 2011 Toyota suv operated by Haille Nielsen, of Greensboro, was attempting to cross W King Street from Old Bristol Rd – and travel onto Poplar Grove Connector. She traveled into the path of the activity bus which was traveling eastbound on W King (coming into Boone) which resulted in an angle collision.

The 2011 Toyota suv rotated clockwise after the impact and struck a stopped vehicle on Poplar Grove Connector. Ms. Haille Nielsen was cited for a safe movement violation.
