WILKESBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation has begun work on a Reduced Conflict Intersection Corridor project on a stretch of U.S. 421.
Branch Civil Inc. began the $81 million project earlier this month to improve safety and mobility for drivers and pedestrians alike.
The Reduced Conflict Intersection, or “RCI”, will result in left turns being allowed at 12 intersecting streets from the 2-mile stretch from U.S. 421 Bypass-U.S. 421 Business intersection to just east of the U.S. 421-N.C. 16 North intersection.
RCI’s improve the overall traffic flow of intersections while also reducing crashes.
Motorists can expect nighttime lane closures, traffic shifts, and new traffic alignments as work progresses.
The completion date of the project is anticipated for Winter, 2028.
