Special Olympics USA Cycling Coach Jake Harkey celebrates wins in Berlin

The Special Olympics World Games 2023 continue in Berlin, and a Watauga County man is celebrating wins by his cycling team.

Jake Harkey‘s team notched the following wins for Special Olympics USA on Wednesday of last week:

  • Mark Springuel (Kentucky) – 2K Time Trial – Silver Medal
  • Stacey Weimer (New York) – 2K Time Trial – Seventh Place
  • Stacey Weimer (New York) – 5K Road Race – Fourth Place
  • Allison Dohrman (Texas) – 2K Time Trial – Fifth Place
  • Mollie O’Connell (Florida) – 2K Time Trial – Gold Medal

And on Friday, June 23:

  • Mark Springuel (Kentucky) – 1K Time Trial – Gold Medal
  • Allison Dohrman (Texas) – 1K Time Trial – Bronze Medal
    Alisha Dey (Maryland) – 1K Time Trial – Seventh Place
    Sean O'Rourke (New York) – 25K Road Race – Fourth Place

Also on Wednesday, Special Olympics North Carolina athlete Philip Blount of Mecklenburg County competed in the quarterfinals of the 100m competition in athletics, where he claimed an eighth-place ribbon. On Thursday, June 22, he returned to the track at Olympiapark’s Hanns-Braun-Stadion, where he claimed gold in the shot put finals.  

Head bocce coach James Price of Davidson County celebrated Special Olympics USA bocce’s first medal, as athlete Brian Johnson of Rhode Island claimed a silver medal in singles competition.

Also on Thursday, Special Olympics North Carolina athlete Philip Blount of Mecklenburg County competed in the shot put finals in athletics where he claimed gold. On Saturday, Blount competed in the 100m athletics event, placing fifth.

On Friday, June 23, head bocce coach James Price of Davidson County celebrated a sixth-place win for Special Olympics USA bocce athlete Abby Brennan of South Dakota.

Also on Friday, Special Olympics North Carolina athlete Erin Cagle of Wake County competed in the preliminary round of artistic gymnastics, and on Saturday competed in the final round of artistic gymnastics. She competed in the final round in vaulting (silver medal), uneven bars (fifth place), balance beam (fifth place), floor exercise (seventh place) and all around competition (fourth place) representing Special Olympics USA.
