One person has died following a crash Friday night in Johnson County, Tennessee, that involved a school bus carrying the Abingdon High School football team, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 9:35 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle near the 7000 block of Highway 91. The crash occurred following the Abingdon-Johnson County football game. Two buses were traveling together; only one was involved in the collision.

At the time of the crash, there were 28 occupants on the school bus. One adult and three juveniles were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed that one fatality has been reported, involving an occupant of the passenger vehicle, not the school bus. A secondary crash also occurred in connection with the initial incident, with minor injuries reported and one patient receiving treatment.

The incident prompted a large multi-agency emergency response. Sheriff Shawn Brown thanked the law enforcement officers, fire departments, emergency medical personnel, dispatchers, and other agencies who responded to what the department described as “a difficult scene.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken over responsibility for the crash investigation and the scene. Additional information about the circumstances of the crash is expected to be released by the investigating agency as it becomes available.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office asked the community to keep everyone involved in the crash, their families, the students and school personnel, and all responding emergency workers in their thoughts.
