Crews installing right-in, right-out island and crosswalk
BOONE – A new crosswalk and island will be installed this week at the intersection of Blowing Rock Road (U.S. 221/321) and Winkler's Creek Road to increase safety and mobility for drivers and pedestrians.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will convert the intersection into a right-in, right-out movement by installing a concrete island that will channel traffic exiting Winkler's Creek Road onto U.S. 221/321 South.
Crews may close one lane of Blowing Rock Road between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., as necessary. All operations will occur during these hours until the project is complete later this week. Inspectors will evaluate traffic conditions and may remove the lane closure should delays become excessive. Winkler's Creek Road will be closed to through traffic near the intersection.
The island installation will reduce the potential for serious-injury crashes that occur during left-turn movements at this intersection. Pedestrians will benefit from a new concrete island and a newly striped crosswalk.
NCDOT officials remind drivers to plan ahead, remain alert and obey all flaggers and traffic signs near a work zone.
