Hurricane Helene shattered the all-time precipitation record that had stood since 1893. The storm dropped 21.47 inches at Seven Devils—more than double the previous record of 9.50 inches. Multiple stations across Watauga County recorded historic totals: Boone (20.12″), Blowing Rock (16.91″), and Foscoe (21.60″ over 3 days). This was the most significant rainfall event in 131 years of recorded history. Helene also spawned an EF-1 tornado near Blowing Rock—the first tornado in Watauga County since 1998.

Hurricane Helene broke Ashe County's all-time precipitation record that had stood since 1940. The storm dropped 17.08 inches southeast of West Jefferson, surpassing the previous record of 13.08 inches set at Idlewild on August 14, 1940. CoCoRaHS observers also recorded 10.95″ at West Jefferson 1.5 W and 9.08″ at West Jefferson 1.4 SE. The cooperative observer station in Sparta recorded 17.29 inches—the wettest 3-day period on record.

Hurricane Helene devastated Avery County with 22.85 inches of rainfall at Banner Elk—nearly double the previous all-time record of 11.57 inches set at Grandfather Mountain on September 8, 2004. The NWS also recorded 14.85 inches at Banner Elk 0.7 W. Six people lost their lives in Avery County from flooding and landslides, including three from landslides in the Newland area. The North Toe River caused catastrophic flooding in downtown Newland, with numerous homes and businesses inundated or swept away.
