Fire crews from several agencies battled a hay barn fire in Todd on Monday.
The fire occurred in the 8000 block of Three Top Rd at 2:18 pm, according to Ashe County Fire Marshal Josh Steelman.
The fire originated in a hay barn that contained approximately 1000 round bales. The large volume of hay stored caused the fire to spread rapidly to an adjacent storage trailer. The heavy winds made suppression attacks difficult and strenuous for crews, Steelman also noted.
The cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction in equipment present in the barn at the time of the fire. Units were on scene initially for 5 hours with Todd units performing fire watch throughout the night due to the forecasted high winds.
Todd Volunteer Fire Department, Fleetwood Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, and Creston Volunteer Fire Department responded initially. Meat Camp Fire Department, and Deep Gap Fire Department were dispatched for additional apparatus and manpower. The Ashe County Fire Marshal was requested to assist with fire origin determination.
