BOONE — The Town of Boone has announced several parking updates that took effect July 1, 2026, including a $600,000 infrastructure investment, changes to its employee sticker permit program, a new Daniel Boone Park permit fee, and an increased fine for overstaying at downtown meters.
Parking infrastructure: The Boone Town Council approved a $600,000 investment to upgrade downtown meter heads with newer, more user-friendly equipment, replace broken meter heads throughout downtown, and support additional improvements to the Town's parking system.
Updated parking fine: The fine for exceeding posted time limits at downtown meters and kiosk lots increased to $40 per violation. The Town says the increase is intended to improve turnover in high-demand areas and make it easier for residents, visitors, and customers to find short-term parking.
Employee Sticker Permit Program changes: The Downtown Boone Employee Sticker Permit Program — which offers designated meters at 20 cents per hour for participating employees — has been restructured after feedback from the Downtown Boone Development Association and business owners. Three spaces on Burrell Street and five spaces on King Street near First Baptist Church have been removed from the program, with the King Street spaces returned to public parking. Five new employee spaces have been added near the Watauga County Courthouse at 842 West King Street. The program remains limited to 50 stickers on a first-come, first-served basis. Employees can purchase a sticker at the Town of Boone Parking Office on the lower level of Town Hall (567 West King Street) with a current pay stub, valid photo ID, and vehicle and license plate information.
Daniel Boone Park permit fee: The annual permit fee for the Daniel Boone Park parking area will increase to $750 for the August through May permit period. Students interested in a permit can contact the Town of Boone Parking Department at (828) 268-6229.
