A Boone man was killed in a crash in Tennessee last week.
A 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling northbound on Mary Patton Highway at Big Springs Road in Carter County shortly after 7 pm on Thursday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).
The Avalanche crossed the double yellow center line striking a 2016 Nissan Versa head-on, then went off the southbound edge of the road, overturning several times before coming to a rest.
The Versa attempted to avoid the crash by swerving right onto the shoulder but was spun counterclockwise, crossed over the northbound lane, and struck the guardrail, coming to a rest on the right shoulder of the northbound lane, according to THP.
Killed in the crash were the driver of the Avalanche, 47-year-old Thomas Whittington of Boone NC, and a passenger in the Versa, 53-year-old Christina Presnell of Tennesse. The driver of the Versa was injured in the crash.
Both drivers and the passenger were not wearing seatbelts, according to THP.
