Two Watauga County middle school students shot hoops and ran drills at basketball camps hosted by two of the state's largest universities this summer, thanks to Cooperative All-Stars Sports Camp Scholarships from Blue Ridge Energy and North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives.
Kenlea Brown of Mabel Elementary School attended the Women's Wolfpack Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, while Weaver Trivette of Bethel Elementary School attended the Carolina Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
“Blue Ridge Energy is pleased to allow these outstanding students to experience life on a college campus and learn from college coaches and student-athletes,” said Tasha Rountree, director of community relations and economic development for Blue Ridge Energy. “These camps teach valuable lessons that students can apply in their lives both on and off the court.”
The students were chosen based on their applications, which included academic achievements, extracurricular activities and a written essay.
The campers joined more than 50 electric co-op scholarship winners from across the state at the camps, where they stayed overnight in dorms and experienced life as a college student. At both camps, coaches and student-athletes worked directly with campers to develop basketball fundamentals and practice skills such as teamwork that will help them excel both on and off the court.
