2.1 Magnitude Earthquake Measured Southwest Of Boone On Sunday

Some residents in Mitchell County may have felt a little shaking going on prior to the Super Bowl Sunday game. A 2.1 magnitude earthquake was registered at 2:18pm Sunday afternoon, but no reports from outlets in that area of any damage. The quake's center was 3 miles SE of Bakersville, North Carolina and 28 miles SW of Boone, according to the US Geological Survey report.

The last earthquake officially felt in the High Country was December 15, 2014. There have been 9 recorded quakes felt in the High Country since 2011 and 6 of those occurring in 2014 alone. For information on the history of earthquakes locally visit High Country Earthquake History.
