BOONE — Many students spend their summer break soaking in rays at the beach or lounging around the house. However, approximately 100 middle and high school-age students will be hard at work on a week-long community service project in the High Country this June.

This week, students will be working with a variety of churches throughout Watauga County. They are staying at Greenway Baptist Church. This summer as a whole, thousands of student and adult volunteers are registered to participate in dozens of World Changers projects across the United States. World Changers is serving not only this week in Boone, but also in more than 20 cities in the U.S. in June and July.
During the week, the students will be working on a variety of assignments that range from painting houses, constructing or repairing decks, putting on siding, interior work like replacing flooring, and various other projects to serve homeowners.
Students traveling with their churches and youth groups pay on average $300 for registration, as well as their travel expenses to take part in this week where they will work on a variety of projects in and around our Boone community. They will come from North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.
The students and adults who participate in World Changers have a desire to serve and grow in their ability to meet the needs of communities. World Changers participants learn what serving others really means throughout the week.
World Changers in Boone is partnered with WAMY Community Action to find the homeowners in need of repairs to their homes. They are also partnering with local churches to provide lunches to the volunteers.
