YANCEY COUNTY, NC – Sheriff Shane Hilliard is issuing a warning to the citizens of Yancey County to be vigilant against individuals posing as volunteers in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While many reputable organizations are working to assist in recovery efforts, there are reports of people coming into the area under false pretenses, seeking to exploit the generosity and vulnerability of local residents.
“We are seeing individuals who are not associated with legitimate organizations in Yancey County under the guise of helping,” said Sheriff Hilliard. “These con artists are preying on people who are already dealing with significant loss and hardship. This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Several of these individuals have already been arrested on drug charges and have a history of deceitful behavior. These con artists often exploit community members’ willingness to help by pretending to volunteer or offer services, all while seeking personal gain.
“This kind of behavior is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated in Yancey County,” said Sheriff Shane Hilliard. “We have seen firsthand how these individuals manipulate kind-hearted people who just want to help. I urge everyone to be cautious and ensure they’re seeking help from a trusted church or a reputable organization. Don’t let these individuals take advantage of your goodwill. Our community is strong, and we will recover from Hurricane Helene, but we must also protect ourselves from those who seek to take advantage of this crisis,” added Sheriff Hilliard. “If you encounter anyone acting suspiciously or claiming to help without credible affiliations, do not hesitate to contact my office at 828-682-2124
