BOONE, N.C. — App State Football head coach Dowell Loggains announced Friday the hiring of college football coaching veteran Allen Mogridge as an offensive assistant coach.
Mogridge has served as the senior football advisor to the head football coach (for offense) at Georgia Tech during a 2024 season that culminates with the Yellow Jackets facing Vanderbilt in the Birmingham Bowl. Prior to that, the North Carolina alum compiled a coaching career resumé that has included stints as the offensive line coach at East Carolina, USF, FIU, Georgia Southern, UCF, Temple and Buffalo.
Mogridge, 48, has helped lead his teams to 14 bowl berths as a player and coach.
“We’re excited to welcome Allen and his family back to North Carolina and to the App Family,” Loggains said. “Allen has tremendous experience as a coach, recruiter and mentor of young men. We’re thrilled for what he will bring to our staff and program.”
Reuniting with Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key in Atlanta after they had worked together at UCF, Mogridge has helped the 2024 offense rank in the top 40 nationally and the top three in the ACC at 186.8 rushing yards per game. Those totals include 371 in a win at North Carolina, 271 in a win against Miami and 260 in the back-and-forth loss to Georgia.
“App State is a special place with great tradition and pride,” Mogridge said. “I’ve been on the wrong side of App State too many times in my career. My family and I are excited to get here and be part of this program.”
Mogridge, who grew up about three hours west of Boone in Sevierville, Tenn., served as ECU’s offensive line coach in 2023 after being the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at USF under Jeff Scott from 2020-22.
In 2022, the Bulls produced their first 1,000-yard back since 2018 while having 10 games with a 100-yard rusher, posting 25 rushing touchdowns and ranking 20th nationally at just 1.17 sacks allowed per game. In 2021, Jaren Mangham rushed for 15 touchdowns.
Mogridge was Butch Davis’ assistant head coach and offensive line coach at FIU from 2017-19, when the Panthers went 23-16 with three bowl appearances. The 2018 and 2019 teams ranked among the top five nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game.
Before being Georgia Southern’s offensive line coach in 2016, when the Eagles ranked second behind App State among Sun Belt schools at 224.2 rushing yards per game, Mogridge coached at UCF in 2012 and again from 2014-15 (with a stint as Temple’s offensive line coach in 2013). He coached tight ends and H-backs at UCF in 2014 before returning to the offensive line in 2015.
UCF won the American Athletic Conference championship in 2014 and the Conference USA East Division title in 2012.
Mogridge worked at his alma mater in Chapel Hill from 2009-11 as a tight ends coach/special teams coach/recruiting coordinator after being at Buffalo from 2004-08, with a role as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006-08. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Buffalo in 2002 and was a recruiting coordinator/defensive ends coach at Western Carolina in 2003.
A four-year letterwinner at North Carolina from 1996-99, he played four different positions (offensive tackle, tight end, fullback, defensive end) and won three bowl games with the Tar Heels before participating in a training camp with the Carolina Panthers. He graduated from UNC in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
Mogridge and his wife, Jennifer, have three daughters – Liv, Izzy and Lola.
