In the latest drought update for North Carolina, all of the High Country is back to abnormally dry status.
Last week, Watauga's north-western section of the county remained in abnormally dry status, while the rest of the county was drought-free. Now the entire county is back in abnormally dry status.
All of Ashe County remains abnormally dry, as was the case last week.
All of Avery County is back in abnormally dry status after a good portion of the county last week was drought free.

Drought categories are based on streamflow, groundwater levels, the amount of water stored in reservoirs, soil moisture, the time of year, and other relevant factors for assessing the extent and severity of dry conditions.
