BOONE, N.C. — App State and head coach Dowell Loggains rang in the new year Wednesday with the addition of Joe Dailey as an offensive assistant coach.
Dailey, who has coached in the NFL, ACC and Big 12 and also served as an offensive coordinator at Liberty and New Mexico, was most recently the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Hampton in 2024.
“We’re excited to welcome Joe and his family to the App Family,” Loggains said. “Joe has a proven history of recruiting and developing high-caliber players and serving as a strong mentor to young men. His experience coaching in college and the NFL brings great value to our program.”
A former quarterback at Nebraska and North Carolina, Dailey has coached quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends throughout his career. His pupils have included standout NFL receivers DJ Moore and Zay Flowers, among others.
“I would like to thank Coach Loggains and Doug Gillin for the opportunity to join Appalachian State University football,” Dailey said. “To be a part of a historic institution that has a reputation of academic and athletic excellence is a privilege. I’m excited about the responsibility to continue to build upon the rich tradition of playing championship football. I can’t wait to get started. Go Mountaineers!”
Dailey’s one season at Hampton was preceded by a season as offensive analyst at Kansas under head coach Lance Leipold. The Jayhawks went 9-4 and achieved their first bowl win in 17 years. Dailey worked with an offense that finished 17th nationally in scoring (34.8 points per game) and eighth in rushing (206 yards per game).
In 2022, Dailey coached wide receivers with the Carolina Panthers, who won four of their last six games under App State alum and interim head coach Steve Wilks to finish second in the NFC South. That season, Moore caught 63 passes for 888 yards (and added 53 rushing yards for 941 total yards) and a then-career-high seven touchdowns in his fifth NFL season.
Dailey was the wide receivers coach at Boston College for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, helping the Eagles to consecutive bowl-eligible seasons. He mentored future first-round draft pick Flowers during his sophomore and junior seasons in which he compiled a total of 100 catches for 1,638 yards and 14 touchdowns en route to All-ACC recognition both years.
Before a 2019 season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at New Mexico in which the Lobos ranked top 30 nationally with more than 200 rushing yards per game, Dailey coached under head coach Turner Gill at Liberty from 2012-18, helping the Flames transition from FCS to FBS. Liberty won four Big South championships during Dailey’s tenure. He led the quarterbacks room throughout that tenure and added offensive coordinator duties for the final three seasons.
Prior to the 2011 season as Bethune-Cookman’s quarterbacks coach when he helped lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 record, Dailey was recruiting coordinator at Kansas in 2010 under Gill after starting his coaching career under Gill at Buffalo.
After one season as a Buffalo graduate assistant in 2008, he was promoted to tight ends coach at the age of 24. During his two seasons, the Bulls won the Mid-American Conference championship and played in the first bowl game in program history.
A native of Freehold Township, N.J., Dailey began his playing career under Frank Solich at Nebraska. As a sophomore in 2004, he earned the starting quarterback position along with team captain honors. He passed for 2,025 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Huskers that season. He transferred to North Carolina for his final two seasons and passed for 1,316 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior in 2006.
Dailey and his wife, Carrie, are the parents of four children: Stella, Noah, Myles and Tyson.
