A chase that began in Vilas ended with a crash in Boone on Wednesday night.

Deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office initiated a vehicle pursuit at approximately 10:00 pm Wednesday night after the vehicle fled from a traffic stop, according to a report from the Sheriff's Office.

A silver 2000 Toyota Camry with a fictitious registration fled from a traffic stop in Vilas on US Hwy 321 North and continued on US Hwy 421 North toward Boone. The driver, Richard Cloyd of Washington County Tennessee swerved his vehicle at Law Enforcement vehicles that had stopped traffic at the US Hwy 105 Bypass, the report goes on to say.

Boone Police attempted to use tire deflation device on West King Street, in an attempt to stop the vehicle before it entered downtown Boone. The vehicle avoided the device and continued to drive recklessly down West King Street.  Cloyd attempted to turn off East King Street onto Hardin road at a high rate of speed and collided with two vehicles that were stopped at the Hardin Street intersection.

He was taken into custody by Watauga Deputies. Mrs. Leann Cloyd was a passenger in the suspect vehicle, and was taken to Watauga Medical center for minor injuries and later discharged.

No other injuries were sustained to the victims that were hit by the fleeing suspect.  Watauga and Boone Police vehicles were not involved in the wreck. Boone Police Department investigated the crash.
