Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered immediately to half-staff in tribute to Reverend and Coharie Indian Tribe Chief Wilbert Lee Ammons.
Chief Ammons died May 11, 2018; the Chief of the Coharie Indian Tribe and a WWII Army veteran. He served as pastor for over 30 years at Mt. Sinia Holiness Church in Waccamaw-Siouan Indian Community of “Buck Head” and was a long-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.
