SCAM ALERT for Avery County Citizens

Last Updated on February 19, 2013 7:41 pm

According to Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye there have been 3 reported cases within the past ten days of people receiving a Payment Pending Memorandum from the Financial Acquisition Agency.

The memo states to the receiving person, that they have a large sum of money, usually over 2 million dollars, which is owed to them by the government or by another fund dispersal agency, and all the receiver has to do is send $20.00 to the agency for processing of the funds.

Sheriff Frye reminds citizens that this is a scam and do not respond or call to the request. Callers are subjected to strong-armed tactics to try to convince them this is real. As with most scams the old adage of “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is correct.

“I want to thank several people for bringing this to my attention, and as always if there is a doubt about any transaction, please call the Avery County Sheriff’s Office and let us verify if it is a scam or not.” Frye adds.
