Gov. Pat McCrory has ordered North Carolina state flags at all state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, June 7, 2014. This order is in memorial of the life and legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou. She was a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, civil rights activist, and Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University.

“Dr. Maya Angelou was a giant in every endeavor she chose to devote her talents,” said Governor McCrory. “She counseled presidents and historic figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Yet, she’ll be remembered most for her compassion for people around the world, regardless of their station in life. Maya Angelou was a tremendous source of pride for North Carolina and her adopted state is grieving her loss.”
