January 30, 2014 Becomes Fourth Coldest For Date

As the temperature tumbled to -6 in Boone on Thursday morning it put Jan 30, 2014 into the record books. Surpassing the -5 mark set in 1934, this date now becomes the fourth coldest since 1893. The coldest January 30 on record belongs to 1966 with -18, follow by -15 in Blowing Rock of the same year.

This makes the second time in January that new records have been set with January 24 becoming the third coldest January 24 on record.

For any January the coldest day on record belongs to Jan 21, 1985 at -24 degrees, that also stands as the all time coldest day on record for any month.
