I-77 At Virginia/NC Border Closed Due To Accident

A 75 car pileup has left I-77 near the North Carolina/Virginia border closed Sunday afternoon. Multiple media outlets are reporting that at least 20 are injured and three people have been killed.

Extreme fog is being blamed for the accident that began around 1pm. The interstate is closed near Galax Virginia.

4:48pm – WSLS TV out of Roanoke is reporting that one lane of Interstate 77 northbound has been reopened. State police says the southbound lanes will be closed for another 3-4 hours.

5:20pm – GalaxGazette.com is reporting that four people are dead and 25 injured.

7pm – State police say 17 different accidents, 95 vehicles involved, Fog to blame. Some cars still stuck under semis according to a reporter for WSLS TV

7:15pm – via twitter- RT @KenHeineck: All northbound lanes open

8:51pm – According to WSLS.com Virginia State Police hope to have the southbound lanes clear by around 9pm.

9:50pm – Ken Heineck of WSLS TV tweeted out that “#carrollcountyva @RedCross shelter closing, crash victims put up in VA/NC motels”

10pm – reports now that the pileup involved 95 vehicles

Monday April 1 update – 12:25pm: GalaxGazette.com is reporting that the confirmed number of fatalities stands at three not four as reported yesterday. A total of 18 wrecks involving 96 vehicles.
