Last Updated on February 15, 2015 11:20 am

The high winds, blowing snow and bitterly cold wind chills prompted the American Red Cross to set up a shelter for several stranded motorists traveling highway 421 on Saturday night.

Working with Watauga County Emergency Management, the shelter was open for an estimated eight people traveling through Deep Gap. Shelter, food and health services were provided by the Red Cross at the Deep Gap Fire Department.

Also on Saturday night, all the hotel rooms in the county were booked according to Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman. Three hotel outlets in Boone tell WataugaRoads.com that they were booked more so due to Valentine's Day and not the weather.
