A high speed chase beginning in Watauga ended with the arrest of a driver in Tennessee early last week.

According to the Watauga County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was traveling 421 North towards Boone when he was met by a black Chevrolet truck traveling the opposite direction at a high rate of speed and in the deputy's lane of travel. The deputy had to swerve to the side of the road to keep from being struck. He attempted to stop the suspect driver and then a chase ensued with speeds reaching 116 mph, according to the Sheriff's report.

The Watauga Deputy, along with another deputy, ended the chase just before Tennessee line. The Sheriff's report goes on to say that a short time later both deputies were advised that the vehicle and driver had been stopped by Mountain City Police along with Johnson County Deputies. The Watauga Deputies proceeded to the location approximately 5 miles into Tennessee to identify the driver. The driver was positively identified and Tennessee took him into custody for a fugitive warrant. The driver was charged by Watauga for Felony Flee to Elude Arrest. The vehicle was being held in Tennessee at the time of arrest.
