Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. A local state Senator spent time with Mrs. Bush on several occasions and shares her thoughts with WataugaOnline.com

Senator Deanna Ballard, R-District 45 (Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Watauga), spent time around the former First Lady during her years working for Mrs. Bush's son President George W. Bush. Before becoming a Senator, Ballard was a volunteer for George W. Bush’s Presidential Advance Team and then later Special Assistant to the President and Director of Scheduling and Advance for First Lady Laura Bush.

Senator Ballard tells WataugaOnline.com that Barbara Bush was truly special. “A wonderful spirited lady who believed in our country and the power of the individual — she genuinely cared and respected all persons.” Senator Ballard went on to add, “I was honored to be in her company on several occasions but am blessed by her contributions to our country, as a whole. I am sincerely praying for my friends and the entire Bush family during this time. May God hold them fast in the days ahead.”
