A wreck last week in Wilkes County claimed the life of a Boone man.

Donald Leon Kanupp, 55, died while being transported to the hospital after a wreck on NC 16 North in Millers Creek, according to a report by the Wilkes Journal-Patriot.

The wreck, on Thursday night, occurred when a 1995 Toyota Avalon driven by Anthony Lewis, 43, also of Boone was turning into a parking lot and was hit in the passenger's side by a 2014 Cadillac driven by Courtney Anderson, 26, of Moravian Falls.

Kanupp was trapped in the vehicle and had to be removed by the Wilkes Rescue Squad, the report says.

Occupants of the Toyota also included Jennifer Lewis, the wife of the driver, and their 7-year-old daughter, the report says. Jennifer was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, while their daughter was treated and released at Wilkes Medical Center.

Anthony Lewis was charged with reckless driving but the wreck remains under investigation, according to the report.
