Driver Suffering Stroke Leads To 421 Wreck On Monday

A dump truck driver that suffered a stroke lead to a multi vehicle wreck on Monday afternoon (April 11, 2016) in Vilas. The truck driver, Randy Brown of Zionville, was traveling north on 421 when he suffered a stroke and sideswiped three vehicles before leaving the roadway, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol report. The truck then hit a large rock in a yard at 3997 U.S. Highway 421 North, continued through the yard and struck a large tree and fence before coming to a stop.  Brown was transported to Watauga Medical Center by Watauga Medics. The dump truck is listed as owned by Champion Paving Inc.

The drivers of the three southbound vehicles are listed as James McCormick of Zionville, William Pace of Statesville and John Ollis of Mountain City, TN. None of those drivers suffered injuries according to the report.

The accident occurred just before 3:30pm and traffic was impacted until after 5pm.
